Step 1: Start by following the directions that Sister Simpson taught for her cord book. Stop following those directions when you have the outside leather cover glued on. (This is for a full leather book.)
Before you glue the inside paper:
Step 2: Sew your buttons on the front wherever you would like to place them and cut holes in the back where the cord will come forward to loop around and fasten to the buttons.
Step 3: Glue both ends of cord into one of the holes to create a loop. (Make sure the loop is the correct size to fit your buttons snug.) Repeat this step with the other hole in the back.
Step 4: Finish up by gluing in the inside paper.
